GIZ\ard The Gizmondo™ and beyond...

\sprt\Reading Comics

In the same week I was simultaneously introduced to the concept of reading old comic book compilations on a screen and the idea that software for doing so might be available for Pocket PC, and subsequently, the Gizmondo.

The previously recommended software, PocketCBZ, was not it. It doesn't quite fit the Gizmondo screen and no matter how I've fiddled with it's limited functionality I always seem to lose some of the image. Often parts with dialogue. It also won't open CBR files which is what the majority of comics I've found seem to come in (possibly due to RAR's superior compression). There is an optional Windows desktop component which allows the adjustment of files for a smaller screen and the ability to convert CBRs to CBZs... however it doesn't help much and seems a little awkward and buggy.

I've tried µBook, a very good ebook reader which I know can view images and opens compressed books. However the jpgs in the standard CBZ file tend to get shrunk to the size of the screen which makes text impossible to read. It is possible to zoom and pan images but µBook is somewhat sluggish and while this can be ignored when reading text, it cannot when reading a purely graphical medium. Also, µBook cannot decompress RAR files either it seems.

The search goes on. Please feel free to make suggestions...
